I was born in Wrangell, Alaska. My parents were both born and raised there. My mom is Minnie Evangeline Kalkins. My dad is Edward Kalkins. I’m a Raven-Frog, my clan is Kaach.ádi. Our people came from three different places: there’s Tahltan Kaach.ádi, Wrangell Kaach.ádi, Kake Kaach.ádi, and a group in Juneau too. It’s originally thought that we all came off the Stikine River, out of the glacier around Wrangell area. On my mother’s side we are Wrangell Kaach.ádi. My grandmother’s name was Emma Shakes and her grandma was Mary Shakes. My dad’s people are Tahltan from Telegraph Creek. My grandmother is Elsie Vance, her mother was Agnes Quock and grandmother was Lucy Quock. My lines go back far in Wrangell and Telegraph Creek.

It comes down to our sovereignty and the right to be at the table. And the more we keep doing that, whether it be the Stikine or the Unuk or Pebble Mine, if you involve the indigenous people in the area, you're gonna have a good outcome.
